A mixed bed ion exchanger in water purification utilizes two ion exchange regenerative systems formed into beads. The mixed bed typically comprises a strong acid cation exchange resin and a strong base anion exchange resin, which together eliminate hydrogen and hydroxyl ions from the purified water. One resin targets positively charged ions, while the other focuses on negatively charged ions. In a dual bed system, the cation resin is always first in line. As city water enters the tank containing cation resin, all positively charged cations are attracted to the cation resin beads and are exchanged for hydrogen ions. Anion exchange devices, on the other hand, remove anions (negatively charged ions such as arsenic and nitrate) and replace them with chloride ions.
